JTG Cruise: Crete and Santorini

July 14th

Today marked the last day of our cruise. On the itinerary were two stops, with the first one being Heraklion, Crete. Upon our early morning arrival, the Journey family had the opportunity to visit the Palace of Knossos and the accompanying archeological site, which is the political and social center of the Minoan civilization. During our stay at the capital of Crete, we also were able to visit the local shops and visit the museum of the famed writer Nikos Kazantzakis.

Following our stay in Crete the Journey family boarded the Majesty Cruise Ship and headed for Santorini. On our voyage to the next island, we enjoyed fresh Gyros and an ice sculpture competition put on by the crew staff. Some of the Journey family also showed off their Ping-Pong skills against other passengers on the ship.

Upon arrival to Santorini, the Journey family headed for the top of the hill. To reach the top, the Journey family had two options; ride a donkey up or take the electric tram to the summit. When the Journey family reached the top, Dr. Dimitriou treated our group to dessert at a restaurant overlooking the beautiful island. Students then perused the island, its shops, and even the island’s active volcanic crater. Some students even went to the volcano to swim and sail. As the sunset, the students headed back to the Majesty and prepared for our voyage back to Athens.

This evening the Journey celebrated the birthday of program director, Dr. Jim Dimitriou. While enjoying dinner, the Journey family surprised Dr. Dimitriou with a cake and a birthday serenade by the cruise staff. Following dinner, we enjoyed a magic show at the ship’s Palace Theatre. When the show ended, the Journey family returned to their cabins and prepared for our return to Athens.
